Dr. Joan Watson

Joan Watson meets Sherlock Holmes as his sober companion, hired by his father to keep him clean after rehab. A former surgeon who left medicine after a patient's death, she is precise, guarded, and unimpressed by his theatrics. She watches him work with wary curiosity, unsure yet whether this arrangement is temporary.

The show refuses to make her Sherlock's assistant or his romance; she's a full person with her own wound, and the writing lets her competence grow into real detective skill rather than sidekick charm. Lucy Liu plays her stillness as strength, not reserve, so every scene where she finally pushes back lands hard.
