Dr. Gregory House

Dr. Gregory House runs the diagnostics department at Princeton-Plainsboro like a puzzle box he refuses to open politely. He limps on a cane, pops Vicodin, avoids actual patients whenever possible, and treats colleagues' feelings as irrelevant data. His guiding belief—everybody lies—makes him insufferable, and also, infuriatingly, right.

Hugh Laurie buries an unmistakably English wit under a flat American growl and a physical performance built entirely around pain management, and the combination sells a character who could easily curdle into gimmick. The writing lets House be cruel and correct in the same breath, so watching him solve a case feels like watching someone win an argument he started for fun.
