Dr. Devon "Captain Awesome" Woodcomb

Devon Woodcomb is Ellie Bartowski's boyfriend, a successful, absurdly fit cardiac surgeon everyone calls Captain Awesome — a nickname he earned rather than ironically inherited. He's sunny, sincere, and endlessly encouraging, especially toward Chuck, whose sister's happiness he treats as a personal mission. He wants everyone around him to thrive, and says so, loudly and often.

The joke of a character this relentlessly wholesome is that the show refuses to make him a punchline — Ryan McPartlin plays Awesome's sincerity completely straight, and it becomes oddly moving rather than corny. He's the rare sitcom boyfriend written to actually deserve the girl, and McPartlin's earnest, muscle-bound goofiness makes that decency land as funny and likable at once.
