Documentary Narrator

An unseen, self-important voice that periodically hijacks Futurama's story to narrate faux-educational segments about the future's history, science, or wildlife. She speaks with the flat, reassuring cadence of an old nature-special host, explaining things earnestly that are usually absurd, disgusting, or both.

The joke is entirely in the mismatch: a calm, authoritative delivery applied to nonsense like exploding whales or the mating habits of robots. Tress MacNeille plays it dead straight, never winking at the audience, which is exactly what makes the deadpan escalation so funny — the more ridiculous the content, the more soothingly she explains it.
