Doctor Amos "Doc" Cochran

Doc Cochran is Deadwood's only physician, a rasping, unsentimental man who patches up gunshot wounds, delivers grim diagnoses, and tends to the camp's prostitutes when no one else will. He complains constantly, expects nothing decent from anyone, and keeps working anyway, hauling his bag through mud and blood with weary, professional devotion.

Dourif plays disgust and mercy as the same impulse, snapping at patients while never once failing them, and the show lets his crude bedside manner double as the camp's only real moral compass. It's a performance built from small physical details—the shake of his hands, the flinch he won't show—that make decency look exhausting rather than noble.
