Dick Loudon

Dick Loudon is a how-to book author who's traded Manhattan for a rickety Vermont inn, hoping for a quiet, sensible life. He's dry, exasperated, and perpetually the only reasonable person in a room full of eccentrics — a handyman husband and innkeeper who just wants things to make sense, and never gets that.

Bob Newhart built a career on the deadpan straight man, and here the show hands him the perfect engine for it: an ordinary guy surrounded by escalating absurdity, reacting with nothing but a raised eyebrow and a perfectly timed pause. The comedy lives entirely in his restraint — he never has to be funny, only patient, and that's funnier.
