Detective Richard Willis

Richard Willis arrives in Wind Gap as the outside detective sent to help solve the murders of two young girls, and he treats the assignment like a puzzle to be cracked with charm and persistence. Polished, curious, and a little smug about his own cleverness, he's drawn to reporter Camille Preaker—and increasingly convinced the town's secrets run deeper than anyone locally wants to admit.

Chris Messina plays him as genuinely likable, which is the trick: his flirtation with Camille feels real, not strategic, so his blind spots about her and about the town land harder. The writing uses his outsider confidence—his belief that facts and charm can pry this place open—to expose exactly how little he understands about what he's dealing with.
