Detective Holland "Dutch" Wagenbach

Dutch Wagenbach is a detective at the Farmington precinct who believes brains beat brawn. Bookish, eager, and quick to explain his own theories on criminal psychology, he chafes against the swagger of Vic Mackey's Strike Team and wants desperately to be recognized as the smartest man in the room. He is not, but he tries.

Jay Karnes plays Dutch's insecurity with such precise, squirming specificity that a character who could have been comic relief becomes one of the show's sharpest studies in wounded ego. The writing keeps testing what his intelligence is actually for — solving crimes or soothing his own need to be admired — and Karnes never lets you settle on an answer.
