Det. Sgt. Philip K. Fish

Fish is the oldest detective at the 12th Precinct, a rumpled, weary presence who looks perpetually two seconds from retirement and one complaint away from collapse. He grumbles about his health, his marriage, and the paperwork, but he's still sharp underneath the sighing, still shows up, still does the job with a dry, put-upon competence.

Abe Vigoda plays exhaustion as comedy without ever making Fish pathetic — the sagging posture and mournful eyes are the joke, but the character's stubborn decency is real. The writing lets him complain constantly while quietly being one of the most reliable men in the room, and that contradiction is what makes him funny instead of sad.
