Det. Maynard Gilbough

Gilbough is one half of a pair of Louisiana state investigators re-interviewing Rust Cohle and Marty Hart in 2012 about a decade-old murder case that has resurfaced. Calm, watchful, and precise, he lets his partner needle the two ex-detectives while he reads their reactions, more interested in what they're hiding than in what they say.

Michael Potts plays Gilbough as the quieter, steadier interrogator, all patient stillness against his partner's more aggressive questioning. That restraint makes him the audience's proxy: skeptical, listening for the seams in Cohle's philosophizing and Hart's defensiveness, and it's his measured suspicion that keeps the framing device tense rather than just expository.
