Det. Liz Danvers

Danvers runs the police in Ennis, Alaska, a small station in a town gone dark for the winter. She's brusque, sharp-tongued, allergic to sentiment, and more comfortable needling her colleagues than comforting them. When researchers vanish from a nearby station, she takes the case less out of duty than because something about it won't leave her alone.

Foster plays her without a shred of vanity — all clipped exhaustion and dry contempt, a woman who has stopped pretending to be nice about anything. The writing gives her real friction with everyone around her, and Foster lets the cracks show only in glances, never speeches, which makes the character feel lived-in rather than written.
