Det. Greg Medavoy

Greg Medavoy is a detective at the 15th Precinct, earnest to the point of self-sabotage, forever explaining himself when no one asked. He wants to be respected as a real cop, but his nerves, his neediness, and his habit of blurting out feelings at the worst moments keep undercutting him in front of tougher colleagues.

Gordon Clapp finds the comedy in a man who is all exposed wiring — Medavoy narrates his own anxiety in real time, and the show lets that be pathetic and touching at once rather than just a punchline. Surrounded by hard-boiled detectives, he's the one whose insecurity feels most recognizably human.
