Det. Diane Russell

Diane Russell arrives at the 15th Precinct as a sharp, capable detective still finding her footing after years of hard living. She's smart, guarded, and quick to prove herself among the men she works with, carrying a recovering alcoholic's watchfulness beneath a tough professional surface. Her instincts are good; trusting them, and other people, is harder.

Kim Delaney plays Russell's competence and her fragility as the same muscle, never letting one soften into the other. The show doesn't treat her sobriety as backstory trivia but as a daily negotiation you can see her making in real time, which gives ordinary squad-room scenes an undertow of real stakes.
