Det. Bobby Simone

Bobby Simone arrives at the 15th Precinct as Andy Sipowicz's new partner, a detective whose calm, watchful manner is nothing like the men who came before him. He listens more than he talks, treats suspects and victims with the same quiet respect, and seems to carry a settled sense of who he is into every interrogation room.

Jimmy Smits plays him as a still point against Sipowicz's temper, and the show trusts that stillness to be interesting rather than passive — his patience reads as strength, not softness. The romance with Sylvia Costas gives him warmth outside the job, and Smits underplays every scene just enough that his rare flashes of anger or grief land hard.
