Deputy Gus Grimly

Gus Grimly is a Bemidji cop who'd rather write parking tickets than deal with anything dangerous, a single father raising his daughter with more heart than instinct. When he lets a stranger drive off after a traffic stop, the choice haunts him — and pulls him toward a case, and a marriage to Molly Solverson, that ask more courage than he thinks he has.

Colin Hanks plays him as decency without swagger — a man aware of his own smallness who keeps trying anyway. The show never lets him become a hero by magic; his growth is halting, embarrassing, real. That mismatch between his gentleness and Fargo's cold violence is exactly what makes him worth rooting for.
