Dean Learner is the man behind Darkplace, credited as its co-writer and star, though it's clear the actual visionary is Garth Marenghi. On screen he plays hospital administrator Thornton Reed with a stiff, deadpan self-seriousness, delivering absurd dialogue as though it were profound, all while narrating the show's making with unearned pride.

Ayoade plays Reed so flatly that the character's non-reactions become the joke — a man wandering through supernatural chaos as if reading a memo.
