A Harvard-educated writer, Webster arrives with Easy Company as an outsider of sorts—articulate, observant, faintly bemused by the war he's landed in. He's not the toughest man in the outfit, and he knows it, but he's thoughtful, principled, and increasingly aware that he's watching history while living inside it.

Bailey gives Webster a wry, literary detachment that sets him apart from the harder-edged men around him, which makes him the audience's natural surrogate—someone processing the war through language rather than instinct. His famous, furious outburst at indifferent civilians is one of the miniseries' sharpest moments precisely because he's spent so long observing quietly.
