David Haller

David Haller has spent years in and out of psychiatric hospitals, diagnosed schizophrenic, medicated into a fog, convinced the voices and visions he's had since childhood are simply illness. He's gentle, funny in a distracted way, and quietly hopeless about ever having a normal life — until a fellow patient suggests his mind might not be broken at all.

Dan Stevens plays David as someone permanently slightly out of sync with the room he's in, which makes every scene feel unstable in a way the show turns into its whole visual language. The performance sells both the tenderness and the danger of a man who has never been able to trust his own head, and neither can we.
