Character
David Estes
David Estes in Homeland (2011), played by David Harewood.
David Estes runs the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, and he runs it like a man protecting an institution as much as a country. He's skeptical of Carrie Mathison's unauthorized instincts about returned POW Nick Brody, more concerned with optics and chain of command than her paranoia — a careful, controlled bureaucrat trying to keep the agency's reputation intact.
Harewood plays Estes with a controlled, weary authority that makes him more than the obstacle Carrie sees. He's convincing as a man who believes in process because he's watched instinct go wrong before, and that credibility is what makes the show's institutional tension feel real rather than merely bureaucratic friction.
David Arthur Estes (1968– December 12, 2012) is the deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and director of its National Counterterrorism Center, as well as Carrie's direct superior, with whom he had an affair while married.
