Character
Darlene Snell
Darlene Snell in Ozark (2017), played by Lisa Emery.
Darlene Snell is half of the Ozarks' reigning heroin family, presiding over the poppy fields and the family business with her husband Jacob at her side. She speaks in honeyed, old-fashioned courtesies, offers pie and sweet tea, and treats any threat to her land or pride as a personal insult demanding immediate, personal correction.
Lisa Emery plays her with a stillness that never signals danger before it arrives, which is exactly the joke and the terror of the character. The writing hands her genteel manners as camouflage for total volatility, and Emery never breaks the surface to wink at the audience — she just lets the sweetness curdle in real time.
Darlene Snell is an antagonist of the Netflix series, Ozark, serving as one of the two secondary antagonists of Season 1 (alongside Jacob Snell), one of the two main antagonists of Season 2 (again alongside Jacob Snell), a secondary antagonist of Season 3, the central antagonist of first half and the posthumous overarching antagonist of the second half of Season 4. She killed her first husband, Jacob Snell.
