Darlene turns up as one of the many odd faces populating New New York, a small voice in the crowd rather than a driver of the plot. She reacts to the chaos around her with the deadpan absurdity typical of the show's background world, present for a beat, then gone, never explained beyond the moment.
Tress MacNeille, one of Futurama's great utility voices, gives Darlene just enough personality to land a joke and vanish, which is its own skill. The character works because the show trusts a single throwaway line delivered with total conviction to be funnier than any amount of explanation.
Darlene is Sean's wife. They met at the 99 Cent Store, and she recognizes Leela as "...the crazy one that Sean dumped" during a confrontation at a resort which actually turns out to be a Zoo habitat run by Dr. Banjo. Like her husband, she's also very cheap and not nice at all.
