A chance encounter with alien trouble on his own doorstep pulls him into the Doctor's orbit, and he throws himself into the madness with open-hearted enthusiasm rather than hesitation.

John Bishop brings a stand-up's timing and an easy warmth that makes Dan feel like an actual bloke from an actual place, not a companion-shaped gap to fill. The writing leans into his ordinariness as a strength—he's baffled by the universe but never diminished by it, and his humour reads as resilience rather than comic relief.
