Colonel Ned Despard

Colonel Ned Despard arrives in Ross Poldark's circle as a decorated soldier and old comrade-in-arms, a man of conviction and quiet integrity. The writing uses him to widen Poldark's world beyond Cornwall, into questions of empire, race and justice, and Regan's calm authority ensures those ideas arrive through a fully human friend rather than a mouthpiece.
