Stammering, limping, dismissed by his own family as a fool not worth educating, Claudius survives the murderous court of Augustus precisely because no one thinks him a threat. He watches, remembers, and writes histories in secret, playing the idiot while Rome's most dangerous people destroy each other around him.

Jacobi's performance is a masterclass in disguised intelligence: the stutter and twitch never quite hide the sharp, frightened mind underneath, so we're always watching two performances at once. The narrator's retrospective calm bleeds into the young man's terror, giving every scene a quiet, dreadful irony.
