Character
Clare Devlin
Clare Devlin in Derry Girls (2018), played by Nicola Coughlan.
Clare is the anxious, rule-following member of the Derry gaggle, a straight-A worrier who wants desperately to stay out of trouble even as her friends drag her toward it. Earnest, easily panicked, and prone to nervous rambling monologues, she's the one calculating consequences while everyone else leaps first.
Coughlan plays Clare's panic as pure comic music — the stammering escalation, the wide-eyed catastrophizing over things nobody else has noticed. The writing keeps giving her something urgent to be right about, and she's funniest exactly when she's most convinced disaster is imminent and everyone else remains blithely unbothered.
Clare Devlin is a main character in Derry Girls. She is one of the protagonists of the series and is portrayed as a good-natured and slightly naïve girl who is part of a group of friends attending a local Catholic girls' school.
