Claire Meade is the icy, glamorous matriarch of Meade Publishing, wife to the company's founder and mother to the man now running it into the ground. She drinks, she needles, she says the cruel thing at the exact wrong moment — and she watches the family empire with the sharp, unimpressed eye of someone who built it.

Judith Light plays her first as pure comic menace, all withering one-liners and vodka-soaked disdain, then keeps peeling back layers until the woman underneath surprises you. The writing trusts a soap dynamo to also carry real grief and reinvention, and Light never lets the glamour curdle into camp — she makes Claire's contradictions feel lived-in rather than written.
