Claire is Josh's girlfriend at the very start of the show, sharing a quiet, comfortable life with him until he tells her he thinks he might be gay. She takes the news with a kind of wry, unshowy grace, refusing to become a wounded ex or a plot device, and stays close to him anyway.

The writing could easily have sidelined Claire as the discarded girlfriend, but it keeps her present, funny and unresentful, letting her friendship with Josh outlast the romance. Caitlin Stasey plays her with a dry, low-key warmth that makes Claire feel like a real person quietly getting on with her own life, not a footnote in his.
