Chester Wanamaker

Chester Wanamaker is one of the many oddball townsfolk who drift through Dick Loudon's Vermont inn, a local fixture with his own small-town logic and unhurried manner. He appears when the plot needs a witness to just how strange this corner of New England really is, offering opinions nobody asked for.

William Lanteau plays him with the flat, unbothered calm that makes Newhart's Vermont feel like its own self-contained universe, where absurd statements land as plain fact. He's a small piece of a large ensemble, but that deadpan commitment to the bit is exactly what gives the show's background characters their quiet, cumulative comic texture.
