Charlie Utter

Charlie Utter runs the freight and mail line into Deadwood, and he's the closest thing the camp has to a decent, plain-dealing man. Loyal to a fault to his late partner Bill Hickok, he watches over Bill's affairs and Jane with quiet stubbornness, uneasy with the camp's corruption but never quite above the fray himself.

Callie plays him with a dry, clipped irritability that reads as integrity without ever tipping into sanctimony—Charlie gripes and scowls his way through decency, which is funnier and truer than nobility played straight. He's the show's moral thermometer, and Callie never lets you catch him checking his own temperature.
