Charles Blake arrives at Downton on official business, sent to assess whether great estates like it have a future worth preserving. He seems careless of the family's grandeur, happier romping with the dogs or eating in the kitchen than observing etiquette, and needles Lady Mary with blunt opinions about the dying world she represents.

Ovenden plays him with an easy, unbothered charm that makes his provocations feel like flirtation rather than hostility, and the writing uses him to voice the modern world pressing in on the estate. His sparring with Mary has real wit, and his refusal to be impressed by rank makes him one of the show's more clear-eyed outsiders.
