Catweazle

Catweazle is an eleventh-century sorcerer who, fleeing Norman soldiers, blunders through time into the twentieth century. Bewildered by tractors, telephones and light switches, he takes them for a rival magic he calls 'elec-trickery' and sets about mastering it, all while hiding in a farm's water tower and relying on a boy named Carrot to keep his secret.

Geoffrey Bayldon plays him with total conviction rather than mugging for laughs, so his terror of a telephone or wonder at a torch feels genuinely medieval rather than cartoonish. The comedy comes from dignity colliding with confusion, and Bayldon never lets us feel superior to him — he makes ignorance look like a kind of grace.
