The Cashier is one of Futurama's countless one-scene faces: a clerk behind a counter somewhere in New New York, ringing up a purchase with the flat, put-upon efficiency of anyone who has seen every kind of customer the future can produce. He wants the transaction over. He is not going to get attached to you.

Billy West's genius on this show was never limited to Fry or the Professor — it's in these thirty-second nobodies too, where a whole life gets sketched in one weary line reading. The joke is scale: a universe this vast still runs on someone standing at a register, unimpressed by robots, aliens, and the end of the world alike.
