Cartridge Unit
Cartridge Unit in Futurama (1999), played by Maurice LaMarche.
Cartridge Unit is a minor robotic figure glimpsed in Futurama's sprawling background world, one of the countless mechanical beings that populate New New York without ever stepping into the spotlight. Little is shown of motive or personality beyond function, existing mostly as texture in the show's dense, gag-filled universe.
Maurice LaMarche's voice work is the whole appeal here: even a background robot gets a specific, committed vocal choice rather than a throwaway line. Futurama's world-building thrives on exactly these small, fully realized bit parts, and LaMarche's versatility turns a blink-and-miss-it role into a tiny, satisfying flourish.
Cartridge Unit was a robot who lived in a community of outdated robots that refused to upgrade to newer technology. This community preferred to live a simpler existence on a little island, free of technology. The speech of Cartridge Unit is merely a playback of selected cassettes, although the selection is always made by Cartridge Unit itself.
