Carl Otis Winslow

Carl Winslow is a Chicago police officer and the weary, dependable head of a full house on Family Matters. He wants quiet, order, and a moment's peace after a long shift, and he rarely gets it — especially once the neighbor kid from next door starts wandering into his living room and his patience.

Reginald VelJohnson gives Carl a bone-deep exhaustion that never curdles into cruelty; his exasperation is the joke, but his warmth is the show's actual engine. He plays authority as something earned through fatigue and love rather than volume, which is why his blow-ups land funny instead of mean.
