Captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Wolverton Randall

Captain Randall is a British Army officer stationed in the Scottish Highlands in the 1740s, a man of polished manners and immaculate uniform who commands with quiet menace rather than shouting. He questions, watches, and smiles in ways that unsettle everyone around him, including Claire, who notices with a jolt that he wears her husband's face.

Tobias Menzies plays both Randall and Claire's twentieth-century husband, and the doubling is the point: the same features arranged into something coiled and cruel. His stillness does the work — a soft voice, an unhurried menace — so that violence, when it comes, feels inevitable rather than shocking.
