Captain Edmund Blackadder

Captain Edmund Blackadder is a weary, razor-tongued officer stuck in the trenches of the First World War, desperate to avoid the front line by any scheme available. Surrounded by fools, incompetents, and a chinless superior who treats slaughter as sport, he schemes, insults, and connives, all while keeping a thin veneer of military discipline over pure contempt.

Rowan Atkinson plays him as the only sane man in an insane system, and the show mines huge comedy from that friction before letting the absurdity curdle into something bleaker. His scorn for Darling, his weary patience with Baldrick's terrible plans, and his rapid-fire put-downs make him endlessly quotable, but it's the flicker of real fear beneath the wit that makes him unforgettable.
