Capt. Andrew Haldane

Captain Andrew Haldane commands K Company, 5th Marines, and the men under him trust him completely. Steady, plainspoken, and unshowy, he leads by example rather than by rank, checking on his troops personally and treating their lives as his responsibility. To Eugene Sledge and the other young Marines, he is the officer worth following into anything.

The Pacific gives Haldane almost no interiority — he's seen entirely through the eyes of the men who admire him — and that restraint is the point. Scott Gibson plays him with a calm, unhurried decency that never tips into speechifying, so his steadiness becomes the emotional ballast of the whole series, the thing its horrors are measured against.
