Camille Preaker

Camille Preaker is a Chicago newspaper reporter sent back to her small Missouri hometown to cover the murder of a young girl. Guarded, wry, and drinking steadily, she moves through her mother's house and her old streets like someone braced for impact, professional detachment barely covering older wounds.

Amy Adams plays her almost entirely through withholding — a flinch, a long pull from a flask, silences that say more than dialogue could. The scripts keep peeling back her composure layer by layer, and Adams never overplays the damage underneath; she lets it surface in glimpses, which makes it devastating.
