Caligula

Caligula is the golden grandson of Germanicus, a beautiful, charming young man who has learned early that flattery and cruelty are equally useful tools. He courts Tiberius's favor with practiced devotion while showing flashes, glimpsed almost in passing, of something colder underneath: a taste for cruelty he barely bothers to hide from those paying attention.

John Hurt plays him as a live wire, all charm and sudden, unnerving stillness, so that his warmth never quite reads as safe. The writing lets him be genuinely funny and disarming before pulling back the curtain slightly, and Hurt's control of that reveal, never overplayed, is what makes him impossible to look away from.
