Calamity Jane

Calamity Jane rides into camp alongside Wild Bill Hickok, already a legend of her own making, foul-mouthed and half-drunk before noon. She swaggers, spits, and swears with the best of the men, but underneath the bluster is a raw tenderness she can barely stand to let anyone see.

Robin Weigert refuses to play Jane as a novelty act or a punchline. The profanity and swagger are real, but so is the wreckage underneath — grief, loneliness, a devotion to Bill that she can't articulate except through booze and bravado. Weigert finds the ache inside the legend without ever softening the legend itself.
