Bumpkin Soldier
Bumpkin Soldier in Futurama (1999), played by John DiMaggio.
A minor military type glimpsed in the margins of Futurama's sprawling future, the Bumpkin Soldier is exactly what his name promises: a rank-and-file grunt with a thick country drawl, following orders without much fuss or ambition, the kind of background face who exists to fill out a platoon.
John DiMaggio, already doing heavy lifting elsewhere in the cast, slips into this one with the same gift he brings to every throwaway role: a fully committed voice that makes a nothing part sound like someone specific. It's a small pleasure, the kind of texture that rewards viewers paying attention to the corners of the frame.
Bumpkin Soldier participates in the training for and the battle of Spheron I with Bender, Fry and Lee Lemon. Usually found with a sprig of wheat in his mouth, he was wounded in the battle and taken to a field hospital where Dr. Zoidberg mistakenly pronounced him dead.
