Boone Carlyle steps off the wreckage of Oceanic 815 eager to be useful, quick to volunteer and quicker to hover over his stepsister Shannon with a protectiveness that looks more like control. Well-off, well-mannered, and a little lost without a clear role, he throws himself into rescue efforts, first-aid duties, and John Locke's orbit, hoping the island will finally make him matter.
Somerhalder plays him as a golden-boy exterior stretched thin over real insecurity, and the writing keeps testing that seam by handing him tasks just past his competence. His devotion to Shannon reads as loyalty before it curdles into something messier, and that slow reveal of what's underneath his eagerness to please is what makes him worth watching.
In actuality, Boone spent 42 days on The Island, before dying in another plane crash, when he found a plane sitting on a cliff and climbed up inside it, making contact through a radio inside. During his mayday plea, the unsteady plane tumbled and fell to the ground. He later died of internal injuries while Jack attempted to save him. After Boone's death, Locke described him as a "sacrifice the Island demanded".
