Billy Baker coaches football at Beverly Hills High, and he sees something special in Spencer James, a talented player from South Crenshaw. He recruits him across town, selling the move as opportunity while juggling his own history — he grew up in the neighborhood he's pulling Spencer out of. Charming, driven, not entirely straightforward.

Taye Diggs plays the charm without letting you fully trust it, which is the point: Billy is a man selling a dream he benefited from himself, and the show never lets you forget he has skin in the game beyond altruism. He's a coach, a father, and a guy still negotiating which version of himself is real.
