Bev Keane runs the small church of Crockett Island the way she runs everything: with a clipboard, a scripture verse, and total certainty that she is the only one paying attention to God's actual will. She is helpful in the way that leaves no room to refuse her help, and devout in the way that curdles into control.

Samantha Sloyan plays her without a flicker of villain self-awareness, which is the whole trick — Bev believes every word she says, and that sincerity is more frightening than any smirk. The writing lets her monologue in scripture and casserole dishes while quietly cornering everyone on the island, and Sloyan finds the menace in niceness itself.
