Bessy Higgins

Bessy Higgins is a young factory worker in industrial Milton, the daughter of union man Nicholas Higgins, and one of the first friends Margaret Hale makes after moving north. Frail from years breathing cotton fluff in the mill, she is gentle, devout, and unflinchingly honest about the harshness of the life she leads.

She gives the story its conscience without ever becoming a mouthpiece: her faith and her fatalism are hers, argued with real conviction against Margaret's brisker optimism. Anna Maxwell Martin plays her with a stillness that never tips into pity-bait, so her friendship with Margaret feels like an equal exchange of ideas, not charity.
