Character

Beryl Patmore

Beryl Patmore in Downton Abbey (2010), played by Lesley Nicol.

Mrs Patmore rules the kitchen at Downton Abbey, ferocious and exacting, terrorising kitchen maid Daisy while turning out the meals that keep the great house running. Formidable but not unkind, she has strict ideas about propriety, hierarchy, and how a scullery should be run, and defends her domain fiercely against interference from above or below stairs.

Lesley Nicol plays her with a bark that's mostly bluster, so the softness underneath lands as a genuine surprise rather than a cheap reversal. The writing uses her as the below-stairs conscience — sharp-tongued, class-conscious, but capable of real tenderness — and Nicol's comic timing keeps even her sternest scenes buoyant.

Beryl Mason (née Patmore; born 1860s) is the former cook at Downton Abbey and she believes that she runs the house, although Charles Carson and Elsie Hughes beg to differ. She is forever ordering about Daisy Mason, her assistant cook. She is a kind hearted and motherly figure to the cooking staff. Though quick to correct mistakes and sometimes a bit harsh, she loves her coworkers like family.
