Avery Brown

Avery Brown is Murphy's grown son, all grown up into a cable news anchor of his own generation - polished, confident, and just liberal enough to needle his famously outspoken mother. He works for a rival network with a different style of politics on air, which puts him at friendly odds with Murphy's old-school newsroom instincts from the very first scenes.

The fun of Avery is generational friction played as affection rather than conflict: Jake McDorman gives him an easy, unbothered confidence that never curdles into resentment of his mother's shadow. Watching two journalists from different media eras spar across a dinner table, both convinced they're the reasonable one, is where the character earns his keep.
