Ava Coleman runs Abbott Elementary the way a nightclub promoter might run a school: with maximum flash and minimum interest in actual education. She landed the principal job through blackmail-adjacent leverage rather than merit, and she treats the position as a stage for her own ambitions, dodging real work while dropping deadpan pronouncements that suggest she barely knows her staff's names.

Janelle James plays Ava with total, unblinking self-regard, never begging for the joke or softening it with a wink to the audience. The writing keeps finding new ways for her selfishness to collide with the show's earnestness, and the friction produces some of the sharpest one-liners on television — delivered by someone who clearly believes she's the reasonable one in the room.
