Asuka Langley Souryuu arrives in Tokyo-3 already a veteran pilot, brimming with confidence and contempt for anyone slower than her. Fluent in several languages and proud of it, she treats Evangelion combat as a stage for proving her superiority, mocking Shinji's timidity while chasing recognition she insists she doesn't need.

Her bravado is the writing's best misdirection: every boast is a plank laid over something unsteady, and the show lets you feel the wood creak long before it explains why. Miyamura and Grant both play the swagger utterly straight, which is what makes the cracks so unbearable to watch open.
