Antonin Scalia's Head

Antonin Scalia's Head in Futurama (1999), played by Billy West.

A preserved head bobbing in a jar somewhere among Futurama's vast museum of twentieth and twenty-first century celebrities, Antonin Scalia's Head is one of the show's countless background dignitaries — glimpsed rather than developed, wheeled out for a line or two whenever the writers need a real-world jurist's dry indignation in the thirty-first century.

The joke is entirely in the premise: a Supreme Court justice reduced to a talking jar among thousands of others, dignity intact but body long gone. Billy West, who voices half the show's population, gives it just enough clipped, put-upon gravity to land the gag before moving on, which is exactly the right amount of attention to pay it.

Antonin Gregory Scalia (March 11, 1936 – February 13, 2016), also known as just Scalia, was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. By 2999, his still living head was preserved and on display at the Head Museum in New New York City. In 3002, he was part of the trial of Old Man Waterfall and in 3009, of the Eco-Feministas.
